I’m kind of a weather nerd and I think this is the only time I’ve ever seen us so close to a 40-degree differential in a single day (-38 degrees in about 12 hours). If you live at high altitudes and/or in the desert, 30+ degree differentials are not that uncommon. But it’s definitely surprising in a Gulf Coast climate. For comparison, winter and summer might be as little as 10 degrees, depending on humidity and cloud cover. 20 is more typical.

Today is one of those “Send your kids to school in a t-shirt, but put a parka in their backpack” types of days. If it weren’t for all the rain, trick or treating would be perfect weather.

Man, I remember days like this growing up in Birmingham seemed so strange due to rarity . Then I moved to Chicago where it’s still not a regular thing, but does seem to happen more.

Yep, or really anywhere in the Midwest where you can go from a Gulf system to an Arctic system in one day, depending on the jet stream, etc.

Reminds me of traveling to the Rockies during spring or fall. You have to take all your clothes.

Same big-ass system stretching precipitation from Monterrey, Mexico, all the way to Quebec City.

As do Loma, MT (103F in 24 hours, January ‘72 ) and Denver (64 F, 18 hours, this year).

Exactly. In fact, I seem to recall that not too long ago we had a drop of about 35 degrees then an increase of about 40 degrees all within 36 hours or so , with a thunderstorm mixed in. That was annoying, and strange.

Not sure what it’ll mean for you, but in Chicago it wasn’t supposed to turn to snow until about noon today, and go into the evening. However, when I woke up at 8:30, it was already all snow. So it’s probably coming your way.

Ha, that’s both funny and frightening. I don’t get how people in places where we/they get snow/rain/etc. always seem to forget how to drive in it. It’s mind-boggling, really. Like they think this is the first time it’s ever snowed-rained-iced here, or something, completely forgetting every past Fall/Winter/Spring .
